The city of Colorado Springs' filings are still before the Water Court, although the City now is exploring an alternative supply source for their future water needs. In their most recent motion (May 1, 1998) with the Water Court, the City has requested a stay of proceedings until the year 2003. This leaves open their option to pursue the Arkansas River dam proposal should they determine that their alternative source of future water proves impractical.
Currently, the Friends of the Arkansas is in its planning stage. We are getting together diverse interests in the community, with the hope that we will build strong coalitions in this region.
We have recently joined River Network, a national river protection organization, whose mission is to help mobilize and organize local and national organizations. They will refer us to river groups that have already dealt with our current issues. We feel that their help will be invaluable to our mission and goals.
