The Monarch / Salida area
is full of outdoor opportunities, some at your doorstep, others
just a few miles away.
Summer Activities
The Arkansas River is one of the most
popular whitewater rivers in the nation. Choose from a variety of
whitewater adventures with Independent
Whitewater Rafting. Hiking and biking are out your door. Explore
“Ghost Towns” and learn to pan for gold, or search for
precious gemstones. Many come to this area to climb a “Fourteener”.
Fish in streams and high mountain lakes. There are excellent trails
and roads designated for jeeping, ATV touring, horseback riding,
and mountain biking. The Salida Golf Course is a great place to
spend your day.
Fall Fun
Drive through the mountains and photograph
Autumn colors from atop the Continental Divide at Monarch Crest,
11,312 ft. elevation, more than 2 miles high. Fall is also big game
hunting season. Mountain Cabins are centered in areas: 56, 57, 561
& 551.
Year Around
Visit Sand Dunes National Monument and
the Royal Gorge. Drive through the mountains and enjoy the view.
Shop in Salida's gift shops and antique stores. Dine at one of the
fine restaurants. Take in a movie. Soak in a hot springs pool.
Or just relax at your cabin.
